Where is Hector Campos now?

One killer featured on the programme is Hector Campos, a Texas man who killed his neighbour, Ana Weed, who had previously taken his wife and child on a trip to Mexico.

In this article, we take a look at this true crime case and ask the question: Where is Hector Campos now?

What did Hector Campos do?

On January 24, 2017, the then 48-year-old Hector Campos fatally shot his neighbour, 53-year-old Ana Weed outside her home in Spring, Texas. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found her lying on the grass and being tended to by her husband.

Ana, who had been shot in the chest, was taken to hospital for surgery but the doctors couldn’t save her life.

Why did Hector Campos kill Ana Weed?

It’s not uncommon for neighbours to have feuds but it’s rare that one neighbour will turn a gun on the other during a dispute. This wasn’t the case for Hector Campos, however.

As reported on the website for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Campos shot Ana in broad daylight while she stood with her dog. When speaking about the murder, Harris County DA Kim Ogg said:

“Hector Campos is a violent and vengeful man who killed his neighbour simply because they did not get along…Ana Weed, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, is dead and her family is devastated because an angry man with a gun could not control himself.”

So, what drove Hector to murder? According to Ana’s family members, Campos began feuding with her after she took his then-wife and infant daughter on a trip to Mexico in June 2016. Campos had allegedly arranged the trip himself but later backed out of it. He was angered when Ana took his family on the trip and later filed for divorce.

Months later, Campos was in his yard cleaning his truck. When he confronted Weed and asked where his family members were, the two of them began arguing. Ana had just been wrapping a gift for her grandson and had a roll of packing tape in her hand. When she tried to retrieve her dog, who had been barking at Campos, she was shot by her angry neighbour with a handgun.

Upon his arrest, Campos told police that he thought Weed was going to strangle him with the packing tape so shot her in self-defence.

The court dismissed Campos’s self-defence claims as Weed’s husband and neighbours told authorities that Campos had been harbouring anger over Weed since she helped his wife with the divorce and ensuing custody battle.

What happened to Hector Campos?

After Campos was charged with the shooting, he was released on bail. He was asked to wear a GPS tracker on his ankle and forbidden from leaving Harris County.

A month or so after the shooting, Campos appeared on the Dr Phil show where he claimed to have fired the gun in self-defense. You can see footage of that interview here.

Criminal proceedings for Campos were delayed to June 2022 due to Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic. At trial, Campos testified on his own behalf but he wasn’t able to prove his innocence. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
