Thank You, Next – Episode 1 “#Situationship” Recap & Review

Episode 1 of Thank You, Next begins with a woman driving all the way out to a party, sneaking in from the back and through the window. She sighs as she enters her bedroom, a wedding dress hanging up. This is Leyla, and she’s about to go through with the biggest day of her life.

However, we cut back and see more of Leyla’s life leading up to this point; we see this wild-child in action. Leyla lives it up and parties hard. She also hooks up with a good looking guy called Seyyaz. She’s also quite tight with her team at work, where she works with her uncle at a law firm.

However, Leyla isn’t paying attention during the big briefing as she’s too busy scrolling social media and chatting with Seyyaz. In fact, she’s assigned the Tepelioglu and Murathan divorce case. She shows up at their lavish house and speaks to Tuba, the woman of the house. She overacts (or just can’t act, either one) and finds herself with quite the caseload. Cem has married 3 times in 15 years and 3 years back he married Tuba, which is where we’re up to here.

Now, Leyla has bigger issues back home. Her ex, Omer, shows up and claims he had a massive caseload over the weekend, hence why he took forever to return home. He apologizes to her, unaware that she’s already moved on, and he packs up his stuff to leave. When he asks to start again and try something new, she throws it back in his face, pointing out that Omer cheated on her. Leyla has also seen all the photos on social media of him and this other woman so there’s no excusing this; she scoffs when he points out he loves her.

Sarp calls Leyla in the morning while she’s out snapping photos for Seyyaz and has big news. It turns out Tuba tried to commit suicide. She’s medicated heavily and apparently has been drinking. And why? Well, it all comes from Leyla. It turns out she drank heavily with her that afternoon when they sat together and she started crying. So Leyla is basically responsible for this. Anyway, Leyla returns to the house and has a frosty encounter with Cem outside but all of this paves way for the real crux of the issue.

Leyla shows up that night at a fancy restaurant and messages her friends. It turns out Seyyaz is a good chef and he watches her eat while preparing a variety of fancy dishes for her. She wakes up over at his place in the morning, and he even makes her breakfast too. However, there’s a big situation back home. It turns out Sarp has messaged the wrong group chat, one where Omer is the group admin, discussing Seyyaz. Naturally, Omer shows and there’s a whole big show, especially when he calls her a cliché.

This spills over to work, where her uncle believes that she cheated on him with Seyyaz. This is quickly tossed aside though when Leyla is driven out to Cem’s place. She’s made to trudge through the dirt all the way to Cem’s place, dirtying her white get-up. When she shows, Cem smirks and points out that if she’s going to play dirty then so will he.

The Episode Review

So the first episode of Thank you, Next sets things up with an intriguing backdrop; a show that feels like a blend of Sex and the City and Ally McBeal. It’s quite a nice blend thus far, although the characters are a bit archetypal and Leyla is borderline a pretty horrible character, so we’ll have to wait and see how things progress over time

For now though, this new Netflix show does look like it’s going to be a decent watch, and quite what will happen between Leyla and Seyyaz remains to be seen.
