Smiley is the latest Spanish LBGTQ+ drama, with plenty of romance, drama and a wonderful tone throughout. After finishing all 8 episodes, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is Smiley Season 1 about?

Alex is a hunky bartender with perfect looks and an envious gym bod. Desperate for more than just a fling, when he sends his latest one night stand Lolo a smiley face emoji in the morning, the lack of a reply sends him into an angry rant.

Alex sends all of this in a voicemail to Lolo’s phone, letting him know exactly how he feels. Only… it’s not Lolo’s phone. He has the wrong number. The number in question belongs to hopeless romantic Bruno. A man who spends most of his time watching romcoms and wanting to find “the one”, he and Alex immediately hit it off on the phone and meet for a blind date.

Of course, things don’t go to plan and it soon becomes clear that the universe is conspiring against these two. From forbidden kisses and misunderstandings abound, through to both characters being whisked away on individual romances, the drama does an excellent job capturing their conflicted feelings throughout the 8 episodes.

Has Smiley been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Smiley has not been renewed for a second season. Given the nature of the show’s content, that could well change if it does good numbers for Netflix. UPDATE: the show has been cancelled (source). 

Generally Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future.

So far, Smiley has had a pretty good reaction from audiences and critics alike, with most commenting on the great tone and the lovable characters.

Given the way this show is set up, there’s definitely potential for a sequel, even if the ending does seem to wrap everything up. We could see relationship problems for Bruno and Alex in the future, or even follow Vero and Patri instead.

However, given the nature of the ending, we’re going out on a limb and predicting that this will not be renewed for a second season.

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Netflix have not green-lit a sequel. However, we could see our characters return for a follow-up, potentially in time for next year’s Christmas. Of course, all of this is dependent on how the viewing figures are for Netflix, so we may have to wait and see.

As mentioned above, we predict that this will not be renewed but we could be completely wrong! We’ll be sure to update this page in the future when more information is known though!

  3. I have watched the first season twice and enjoyed it so much both times. I’ll understand if they don’t continue the show because it wrapped up so nicely, but I would certainly watch a second season. It would be fun to see Bruno and Alex together more. I loved both of them but definitely identified more with Bruno.

  5. Yes. A second season would be great. Bruno was a bit annoying at first but we liked the development of the characters and look forward to more of their futures.

  9. I loved this and many of my friends are watching too. We all want to see another season. I recommended to my friends. I loved all the characters and fell in love with Alex Two Gyms.

  10. Smiley is simply the best Netflix show of the year, even better than Heartstoppers of which I loved. I was on the edge of my couch the entire time and just fell in love with both the main characters and their amazing group of friends. While season 1 does wrap up nicely there are so much more Id love to know about the characters. Where will they all go from here. I truly hope it’s brought back for a second season and till then will simply have to watch it again. 🙂

  12. The 2 characters of Bruno and Alex both stole my heart. I can relate to there constant miss communication and missed opportunities during season 1. I loved how they did finally give into their true feelings to one another. This left me in a pool of happy tears and wanting to know more. I also want to know so much more about all of the characters and how their lives unfold.
    Such a relevant show. Please bring them back.

    We certainly enjoyed the season 1.
    Great to have a gay, lesbian and straight couples program show that we can watch and 😉

  21. We need lgbtq+ shows like Smiley. Gay people are ALSO like these characters, we’re not all about being victims of hiv, homophobia, and tragic endings. We exist too. Sorry for being negative, but it’s to reinforce how we all need series such as Heartstoppers and Smiley. Really well done.

  25. I ll kill my self if they dont play the second season cuz I truelly loved everything about specially the way the mixed gay and lesbian on the same show wich I never saw it b4!!! And of course with a touch of a straight couple with 100 kids kkk, it was just sooooo pleasant to watch a such great serie!!! Congrats for all the casting and criatividade they putted on the show!!!! I 💕 smiley
