Munjya Plot Summary
Many years ago, a woman beats her young son with a cane because he insists on marrying their neighbour’s daughter, Munni, who is 7 years older than him. The boy gets his head shaved due to a ritual on the same day as Munni’s wedding. Infuriated by Munni’s wedding, the boy tries to perform a black magic ritual to win Munni over. He tries to sacrifice his younger sister but ends up dying when his sister tries to protect herself.
The villagers tell the little boy’s mother how her son would turn into a Munjya – a child ghost if they do not perform more rituals. The priests try to contain the little boy’s spirit to the tree he died near. Years later, a geeky boy named Bittu returns to his hometown to attend his paternal cousin – Rukku’s wedding.
There, Bittu learns that his father was killed while trying to cut down the tree Munjya was tied to. He goes to visit the tree but ends up being captured by Munjya. His grandmother tries to save his life and goes to the tree to bring Bittuo back.
Who is Munjya?
Bittu’s grandmother, Aaji, uses a can to threaten Munjya and manages to bring Bittu home. However, Munjya manages to imprint on Bittu and escapes the forest. On their way back home, Aaji tells Bittu that she was Munjya’s sister and it was she who accidentally killed her brother when they were little. Munjya kills Aaji after latching on to Bittu which leaves Bittu in shock.
Why is Munjya after Bittu?
Munjya follows Bittu back home and threatens to kill his mother – Pammi. He asks Bittu to look for Munni as he wants to marry her. Bittu uses the help of his maternal cousin – Diljeet and his paternal cousin – Rukku to find Munni. Rukku sends Bittu childhood photos of Aaji and her brother. Bittu realises that Munni looks just like Bela, the girl that he likes.
As it turns out, Bela is the granddaughter of Munni. Munjya insists on marrying Munni right away. However, after seeing how Munni looks so many years later, he changes his mind. He tells Bittu that he now wants to marry Bela and asks him to prepare a ritual to sacrifice Bela.
What does Elvis tell Bittu?
Bittu and Diljeet meet a religious leader named Elvis Karim Prabhakar and learn all about the legend of Munjya. Elvis asks Bittu to take Bela to his hometown and perform the ritual as per Munjya’s orders. He asks Bittu to kill the sheep that Munjya would possess to marry Bela before the marriage.
What happens to Munjya?
Bittu lies to Bela and takes her to his hometown where they can perform the ritual. Bittu is about to confess his feelings to Bela when her boyfriend – Kuba shows up. Munjya sees Kuba trying to kiss Bela and beats him up. Kuba is hospitalised but Diljeet and Rukku get prepared for the ritual. Bittu gets Bela drunk and they start performing the ritual.
However, when Munjya possesses the sheep, Bittu tries to kill it. The creature feels betrayed and gets furious. He possesses Bela and tries to kill the group. Meanwhile, Bela’s spirit ends up in the body of the sheep. Bittu and his cousins try to save Bela and Munjya ends up possessing Rukku’s father.
How does Bittu save Bela?
Bittu feels defeated but he recalls Aaji’s teachings and gets the courage to defeat Munjya. He finds the can that Munjya is afraid of and beats him with it. Munjya escapes Rukku’s father’s body and ends up inside the tree that he initially possessed. Bela and Bittu try to escape but Munjya uses the branches of the tree to try and kill the two.
However, Bittu and Bela work together to burn the tree and kill Munjya. Bittu and Bela end up going back to their respective homes with Bittu finally free from Munjya. Bittu confesses his feelings for Bela but she tells him that she only sees him as a friend. Both, Bittu and Bela part ways and decide to remain friends.
How does Munjya end?
The tree that Munjya possessed is cut down and sent away to a different village. The film ends with a post-credit scene where Jana brings clothes for Bhaskar after he has transformed into a werewolf. Bhaskar utters the word “Munni” during his conversation with Jana which wakes Munjya up.
