What’s the movie about?

The movie’s premise is a mix-up of Fight Club and American Pie with some unexpected plot turns and two central characters many will find relatable.

Love, Simon (2018)

Where can I stream Love, Simon?

Disney+ (UK)

What’s the movie about?

Nick Robinson stars as Simon Spier, a popular student with a secret that he hides from his classmates, family, and his friends – he’s gay! The movie charts his journey as he tries to find both his true self and the mysterious love connection that he has been talking to via email.

Love, Simon broke new ground as the first mainstream film to focus on a gay teen romance. It’s a delightful watch that likely inspired many closeted teens to come out as gay to their peers.

Femme (2023)

Where can I stream Femme?

Netflix (UK)

What’s the movie about?

Femme is an emotionally complicated movie about a man named Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) who is the victim of a vicious attack when he walks home in his drag costume. On the surface, the plotline of this movie is sadly familiar but this engaging British drama has a twist – Jules’ attacker (George MacKay) is a closeted gay man who he forms a relationship with during a mission of revenge.

Predictable this movie is not. It’s both a heartbreaking depiction of a terrible hate crime and a twisted love story between an openly gay man and a brutish thug who is fearful of coming out of the closet.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Where can I stream Portrait of a Lady on Fire?

Netflix (UK) Hulu (US)

What’s the movie about?

The movie is a searing French drama about a female painter who travels to the island of Brittany to paint a wedding portrait of an unwilling young woman. Over time, the two develop a secret romance that threatens to unravel both of their lives.

Set in the 18th century, this is an exquisitely made period movie that is both poetic and painful in its depiction of two women who have no choice but to keep their romance under wraps because of the rigid times in which they live.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (2021)

Where can I stream Everybody’s Talking About Jamie?

Prime Video (UK and US)

What’s the movie about?

Based on a true story, this funny but occasionally heartbreaking film tells the story of Jamie (Max Harwood), a 16-year-old student who wants to attend his school prom in drag. Unfortunately, his school teachers aren’t willing to let a boy attend prom in a dress. Not that this stops Jamie, who is determined to show his prejudiced classmates and teachers who he really is!

This British movie is inspirational and occasionally very funny. But beneath the laughs, glam, and glitter, is a painfully moving story of a young man whose father doesn’t want anything to do with him because of his sexuality.

Alex Strangelove (2018)

Where can I stream Alex Strangelove?

Netflix (UK and US)

What’s the movie about?

Growing up is rarely easy but spare a thought for Alex, a straight-A student who thinks he’s straight but who begins to question his sexuality when he meets a handsome gay kid from the other side of town.

This witty and compassionate movie speaks to any young person who is experiencing sexual confusion during their teenage years.

Bros (2022)

Where can I stream Bros?

NOW TV (UK) Starz (US)

What’s the movie about?

Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane star as two commitment-phobic gay men who try to form a relationship. The ensuing love story is unconventional, to say the least.

Eichner’s film is a queer homage to the classic American romcoms of the past. It’s frequently funny but also surprisingly poignant and relatable in its depiction of two men who struggle to stay together because of their deep-rooted intimacy issues.

All of Us Strangers (2023)

Where can I stream All of Us Strangers?

Disney+ (UK) Hulu (US)

What’s the movie about?

Andrew Scott stars as a screenwriter who faces up to his past while also developing a relationship with his downstairs neighbour (Paul Mescal).

This haunting and reflective movie is both a sensual gay romance and a deeply moving meditation on loss. Once seen, never forgotten.
